Guidelines for hot Humpy fishing Humpies return home to Puget Sound Rivers at the height of summer. Good weather, long days and easy to boat fish are the recipe for a real good day on the water. The best fishing is early in the morning or late in the evening, but these fish will hit all day long. Humpies are aggressive biters. GO SLOW! ! While you can catch Humpies at any speed, if you are especially targeting them, slow and slower works best. Humpies are ordinarily caught in the top 60 ft. of water, but occasionally on sunny days, will go quite deep. Downriggers of course are the most effective way of fishing because it gives you depth control. The most effective lures when Humpy fishing are hot pink mini squid or small spoons fished behind a dodger or flasher. Be sure to use scent to your advantage. Smelly Jelly in shrimp flavor not only covers the smell of your hands, but also adds a strong attraction. The more gear you have in the water, the more Humpies you will catch. Keep your rods in the water when landing your hooked fish. Often another fish will bite; doubles or even triples are not uncommon. If you land a fish, circle around and hit the school again. Halibut live on or near the bottom of the water and prefer water temperatures ranging from 37. 4 to 46. 4 degrees Fahrenheit. Washington Halibut migrate into Puget Sound in late winter thru spring and summer, from November to March, mature halibut concentrate annually on spawning grounds along the edge of the continental shelf at depths from 600 to 1,500 ft. Halibut are strong swimmers and can migrate long distances. Halibut of all ages and sizes are involved in a predominantly clockwise (northwest to southeast) migration from their settlement areas (western part of the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea), reproductive fish also make regular seasonal migrations from more shallow feeding grounds in summer to deeper spawning grounds in the winter. Halibut taken by anglers are generally 15 to 20 lb in weight; but fish over 150 lb are regularly caught. The current Washington state record for a sport-caught halibut is 288 lb. Anglers use stout saltwater gear to harvest halibut. Most anglers prefer to fish with bait, especially herring, but also squid, octopus, cod pieces, or other small bottom fish. To get the bait down to the halibut, it is usually fished on a wire spreader or a sliding-sinker rig with sinker size 4 oz to 4 lb, depending on such factors as depth and current. Everything you need to fish is provided — rods, reels, tackle, and bait. We recommend bringing: Lunch, snacks, and drinks Camera and binoculars Sunscreen and sunglasses Warm clothing and a rain jacket A positive attitude and a desire to have fun! If you forget something, let us know — we usually have extras on board. You’ll likely see marine wildlife such as seals, sea lions, Dall’s porpoises, and occasionally orcas. The cabin is covered and heated with a marine head (bathroom), so you can warm up or get out of the rain anytime. Dress in layers, as mornings can be cool and afternoons warm. Private Restroom Onboard Yes — we have a bathroom on board! Every All Star Fishing Charters boat includes a private marine head, so you can stay comfortable and focus on the fun of fishing, not where the nearest restroom is. Our goal is to make your time on the water as enjoyable and worry-free as possible. Will we still go if the weather is bad? If the water is too rough for safety, we will reschedule or cancel. If it’s just raining, we’ll still go — this is the Pacific Northwest! Our boats have heated, covered cabins to keep you comfortable. What if I need to cancel? Cancellations are sometimes unavoidable. We’ll always do our best to reschedule your trip first.
